The play's the thing: A [mini-]phenomenology of fashion
Franklin, Alex
Authors
Abstract
Drawing on literature from play studies, developmental psychology, gender studies and phenomenology, this paper will argue for a conception of fashion as an extension of the play behaviours key to a child's psychosocial development and mental health. Specifically the discussion will focus on an "everyday" (in the Heideggerian sense of the word) mode of engagement with fashion - as distinct from the knowing spectacle of cosplay, for example - and its ambivalent role in the continued "doing" (J. Butler 1990) of a subject's identity.
