Performance of sustainable drainage for urban flood control, lessons from Europe and Asia
Rose, Carly; Lamond, Jessica
Abstract
It is widely accepted that urbanisation can have a deleterious effect on the natural water cycle, as the increase in impermeable surfaces leads to more surface runoff. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify the best possible evidence in Europe and Asia for the technical performance of sustainable urban drainage techniques (SUDS) reducing flood risk in urban areas, drawing upon both academic and industry sources. Although SUDS measures are frequently suggested as a suitable approach for reducing flood risk the weight of research evidence is tending toward their other uses in water quality and environmental enhancement. There have been few studies in Europe and Asia that have critically evaluated their performance and contribution to managing extreme events and the available studies suggest that it is important to make assessments of performance and suitability of measures in the context of local climates and geo-technical conditions. Therefore Recommendations for further research are outline that may provide better knowledge and evidence for the optimal incorporation of SUDS in integrated flood risk management for Europe and Asia.
