Green roof and permeable paving retrofit to mitigate pluvial flooding
Wilkinson, Sara; Proverbs, David; Lamond, Jessica
Abstract
Green roof retrofit is seen to be to be an important part of climate adaptation strategies for CBDs generally and in Melbourne in particular. Retrofit of perrmeable paving is also an important SUDs approach within crowded CBDs. The potential for mitigation of pluvial flooding in CBDs through retrofitting of green roofs on the commercial office buildings and retrofitting permeable paving in Melbourne, Australia was explored. The potential proportion of 15% of existing office buildings that could be retrofitted with extensive green roof technology was established and an analysis of the potential reduction in rainwater run-off from green roof and permeable pavement retrofit in Melbourne was found to be 22%. This was seen to be a useful contribution to mitigation of future flood damage and also could deliver multiple environmental, social and economic benefits to the city in particular reduction of urban heat island, air quality, and thermal performance.
