EU accession migrant health in the UK

Abstract

Migration is becoming one of the defining issues of the 21st Century, and it is argued that it has a wide-ranging impact on the demand for existing health services as well as their appropriate usage. Health of migrants and their families is recognised as important public health issue but research to date is limited. There is some limited evidence to suggest that health behaviours of people who migrate deteriorate over time, which has a consequent impact upon the health of children. This conference paper focuses on the context of migration from the perspectives of recent migrants to the UK. Qualitative research (focus groups) was carried out with parents of pre-school children who had migrated to the UK within the last ten years. We also carried out interviews with health professionals working in UK health care settings. This study highlights findings related to changing health behaviours among recent migrants, as well as the perception of UK health care services in comparison to their country of origin. These findings have implications for policymakers, commissioners and providers of health services in the UK
