This special issue contains a selection of reviewed papers presented at the International
Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution, which took place
in Crete, organised by the University of the West of England and the Wessex Institute of
Technology.
The papers in the issue are due to a series of researchers and air pollution practitioners who
have contributed to the scientific and policy aspects of this evolving field. The papers reflect
international as well as regional issues, through the contributions of authors from many
countries around the world.
The editors acknowledge that solid scientific knowledge is essential to formulate regulatory
decision making. The scientific knowledge derived from well designed studies needs to be
allied with further technical and economic studies in order to ensure optimal solutions. Policy
makers, citizens and all stakeholders need to understand and appreciate the risks and rewards
involved in different air pollution strategies. Communication in this regard is of fundamental
importance.
The papers contained in this issue make an important contribution to the solution of a problem
of increasing importance in modern Society.
