Abstract

Leadership is full of paradoxes, yet many leaders and their organisations either never recognise this or hold onto the belief that these are ‘problems’ to be solved or made to go away. Leadership Paradoxes rejects this view, suggesting that paradoxes are an integral part of leadership and that to be successful leaders and organisations must learn to live with, and where possible embrace, the challenges and opportunities of paradox. This has implications for leadership theory, practice and education - requiring a more flexible, systemic and pluralistic approach to developing and supporting leadership capacity in groups, organisations and communities. Leadership Paradoxes draws together insights from experienced leadership researchers, developers and practitioners, to highlight the nature and implications of a range of commonly encountered paradoxes of leadership, encouraging critical reflection for leadership students and educators as well as current and aspiring leaders themselves.
