Abstract

Five Jugs featured in the "Pour Me" exhibition.

These jugs are the result of experiments into the use of 3D printed extrusion dies.

The experiments starts by carefully designing clay extrusion dies in a computer program. These dies are then fabricated via 3D printing with millimetre accuracy. The dies are then used to produce a series jugs with the age-old clay extrusion process. The plasticity of the clay can course unpredicted ‘curling’ in extruded forms, which affects the shape of the jugs.

The aim of this project is to seek to expose how the material properties (rather than technology) can impact creatively on the design process - in particular how the physical characteristic of plastic clay affects, and sometime corrupts, designs that have been carefully planned through the use of digital tools.

All the jugs are based on a basic teardrop cross-section, some of them work (pour) while others take strange but interesting forms – but don’t pour so well.
