Abstract

Synopsis of Presentation:

Hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP) and Gleno-humeral subluxation (GHS) are common secondary complications of stroke that can lead to functional limitations and reduced quality of life. The aim of this presentation is to share findings from our recent survey on how HSP is assessed, diagnosed and managed in routine clinical practice by physiotherapists (PTs) and occupational therapists (OTs) in the UK. Management for GHS is also varied and generally ineffective/unsatisfactory. Given that recommendations for both HSP and GHS are limited in the RCP guidelines for stroke (2016), we need some direction for the assessment/treatment and effective management of these problems. To address these issues, I would like to share few case studies from our practice which have shown be beneficial in improving outcomes for our patients with HSP and GHS. To summarise, this presentation aims to cover where we are at with these secondary problems following stroke and what the future holds?
