Abstract
Starting after the severe flood event of August 2002, computer‐aided telephone interviews (CATI) have repeatedly been used in Germany to remotely collect large standardized data sets on flood losses and possible influencing factors by questioning affected residents and company owners. In comparison to on‐site surveys, the data cover a larger number of affected properties in different environmental and socioeconomic settings, as well as a variety of factors that potentially influence the amount of damage. In this chapter, sampling strategies, questionnaires, and problems encountered when questioning residents and business owners are outlined. Further, the method
(CATI) will be compared to other survey techniques. The chapter is complemented by a reflection of approaches in the United Kingdom (UK).
