Chaim Soutine (1893-1943): Life and Work

Abstract

This lecture provides an introduction to Parisian painter Chaim Soutine (1893-1943): when and where he lived, what he painted and how he sits within the context of interwar French art. Friends with Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), respected by Picasso, sold by influential art dealers and collected by wealthy patrons, Soutine was located firmly within the Parisian art world contemporary with him. The lecture also features an overview of Soutine’s landscapes, still lifes and portraits – the only genres in which he worked – with a view to demonstrating the breadth and complexity of his oeuvre and his subject-matter.
