Abstract

This film has been made by the Nottingham based Slave Trade Legacies (STL) group with Dr Shawn Naphtali Sobers, based on a poem by Michelle 'Mother' Hubbard. STL is a mainly African Caribbean group working to gain acknowledgement of the contribution of our enslaved ancestors in British heritage sites, in partnership with Nottingham University, funded by AHRC, Nottinghamshire Council, and the Arts Council of England.

Lord Byron sold Newstead Abbey in the early 19th century to Thomas Wildman, who used his wealth gained from Jamaican sugar plantations worked by enslaved African people, to restore the property to its current glory. We use this poetry-film to reflect on our enslaved ancestors’ contributions to Newstead Abbey, which now has the film of permanent display.
