Abstract
This short article for a professional and practice audience draws lessons for local leaders from Gareth Southgate's enormously successful leadership of the English national football team. Sports management is, of course, rather different from place-based leadership. But, notwithstanding the important differences, it is possible to identify clear lessons from the 'Southgate approach' to leadership for local politicians and public managers. Three stand out. Effective place-based leadership in modern times is: 1) Collaborative, 2) Laden with emotional intelligence, and 3) Recognises that inspirational leadership goes well beyond successful organisational leadership. Southgate, a wise football team manager, is contributing to the national debate about what it means to be English in 2018.
