Abstract

Health visitors have reported feeling ill-prepared for the complexities of working with refugees and asylum seekers (Drennan and Joseph, 2005). This paper highlights some of the main physical and mental health issues that health visiting teams are likely to encounter and discusses the role of the health visitor in reducing inequalities for this group. Some of the particular challenges in safeguarding work with asylum seekers and refugees, who often have very complex needs, are highlighted. The unique role of the health visitor means they are well placed to support and empower individuals and improve health outcomes in this group.
