Man-made crystals

Abstract
As a self-proclaimed alchemical jeweller Sofie Boons will trace her practice and obsession with scents, substances and science followed by an insight into her current PhD investigation into the design implications, possibilities, and limits of utilising man-made crystals in the development of jewellery. Man-made crystals are driving innovations in a variety of sectors, and enable our technologically advanced lives. Yet, in the industry for which they were originally produced, their position is tenuous and little innovation in their development beyond imitating or simulating natural stones has taken place. With their value largely dependent on a social construct and their use in some circles still frowned upon, Sofie will aim to shed light on their development, the debates around the terminology used to describe them and the context man-made gemstones have been and are currently appraised in. Additionally, in a future where sustainability and unique designs are highly valued characteristics, the methodology of growing crystals is being investigated for the creative opportunities it could provide jewellers.
