Abstract
There is a growing interest in the concepts and practices of open innovation and especially with regard to the role played by involved in these practices. This requires a more in-depth knowledge of the concepts, since the fundamental basis of any open innovation process is intrinsically linked to the absorption capacity in an organization, regardless of the degree of openness adopted by innovative companies. This research sought to understand in how these companies deal with different levels of since it is a variable that can impact innovative according to the different types of open innovation strategy implemented. Industry was chosen because of its great relevance in the Brazilian economic context, and also because it has been little explored by researchers in the social sciences applied. In summary, the results indicate that the leading companies in the Brazilian market showed a greater tendency to seek external knowledge, but also knowledge of internal R & D, while the others focused on the internal. The assimilation is easier in companies that invest in qualification of persons, or that select people with better qualifications, which is large. More open practices require more effort to identify, assimilation and exploitation of knowledge, indicating a greater complexity in the management, in addition to a higher level of demand for absorptive capacity. The the existence of a relation between the concepts studied, that is, the greater intensity of practices related to open innovation may suggest a greater commitment to the development of absorption capacity. More open companies have demonstrated higher levels of absorption capacity, where externally acquired knowledge is normally assimilated and related to those already existing in these companies
