Abstract

Abstract
Introduction
As the demand for hip replacement continues to grow and the resources for health care are in high demand, it is necessary to reconsider historical recommendations for long-term follow-up of all patients. This study explored the views of patients on the need for, and provision of, such a service.
Materials and Methods
Three focus groups provided the forum for discussion of five topic areas: a) Existing knowledge and understanding of the need for follow-up; b) Timing of revision surgery; c) Follow-up appointments and patient safety; d) Inclusion in long-term follow-up services; e) Structure and delivery of follow-up services.
Results
Seven participants represented males and females, a range of ages, and pre-, post primary and revision hip replacement experience. Emerging themes included a need for information after surgery, importance of specialist review, emphasis on quality of life as indicator for revision surgery, reassurance as essential element of follow-up, acceptability of questionnaire and x-ray without face-to-face clinic, preference for local access, no exclusions.
Discussion
Participants all preferred some long-term follow-up but recognised cost implications and suggested opt-in services prompted by questionnaires with rapid access to specialist review when necessary. The use of digital tools could provide a cost-efficient service but concerns about equity of access require further exploration of this type of follow-up.
Conclusion
The current pandemic has accelerated uptake of digital solutions for the delivery of healthcare and this report of the patient view provides information for redesign of the long-term follow-up after hip replacement.
