Abstract

The chapter looks at the globalisation of the Soviet model of education and childhood, first to Central and Eastern Europe, and then to the 'Third World' after the war. It covers the attempts by socialist bloc states to internationalise children's rights through the UN and argues that the initiation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child (1989) was the result of their actions, in the context of debates about development, internationalism and the struggle over human rights in the 1970s.
