Abstract

In light of the climate crisis and emerging health challenges, there is an urgent need to address these issues in an integrated approach. The presentation highlights how the design (and retrofit) of the built environment can help to improve both human and planetary health simultaneously. Urban areas contribute significantly to climate change and many of the ‘solutions’ to these issues can also lead to improvements in human wellbeing. The keynote examines evidence-based research establishing how the design and redesign of the built environment can lower our carbon footprint whilst also improving wellbeing. In particular, this ‘health turn’ for built environment professions such as architecture, urban design and urban planning raises profound ethical and moral questions, as these professions become more responsible for population health, and by extension part of an expanded medical and public health workforce.
