Abstract

More Akin To That Of An Interloper, is a commissioned text on Sophie Hayes' Storage as part of the Document and Location programme. The text engages with the core ideas of Storage, a project by Document and Location member Sophie Hayes that explores the secret life and unintentional narratives of the non-public spaces of major museums across Europe.

In More Akin To That Of An Interloper, the reader is guided through seemingly off-kilter museum storage facilities, before tracing how Hayes’ fleeting access and documentation of these spaces and their contents generate a peculiar insight into a world that is otherwise off-limits to the general public. In reference to Donna Haraway’s writings on taxidermy and Ebony Andrews’ assessment of the increasingly hybrid nature of museum storage as both private/public spaces, the text explores how Storage complicates our relationship to the museum.
