Abstract

In 2018, CW+ received a grant from the Tavolozza Foundation to initiate the CW+ Drawn in Residence Programme, featuring resident artist Anouk Mercier to draw and observe the Chelsea and Westminster hospital community, research the history of drawing
in relation to medicine and respond to the Trust’s archive which dates back to 1719.

As part of the programme, residents from the Topolski Studio in partnership with Gary Embury editor in chief of Reportager.org UWE, captured life at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital through drawing. This culminated in an exhibition of drawings at the Topolski Studio on London’s South Bank, and a publication, ‘Drawn in Residence’ featuring the work of the current Topolski studio residents.

The project has developed into an annual student artist residency with CW+ based at Chelsea and Westminster hospital. This year due to the high quality of applicants, three residencies have been awarded to final year illustration students at UWE.
