Abstract
Jaipur Photo is an annual international photography festival held annually throughout the city of Jaipur, India. It offers a curated selection of international photography exhibitions staged at various UNESCO World Heritage Sites across Jaipur; visitors are invited to discover the city’s remarkable heritage while visiting the large-format, often site-specific exhibitions of the best of contemporary photography today. Its partners include the Government of Rajasthan, the Embassy of Spain in India, the Norwegian Embassy, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and others.
In 2018, Aaron Schuman was invited to be Chief Curator of the festival’s 2018 edition. Entitled “Homeward Bound”, the main exhibitions programme featured 13 solo-exhibitions, curated by Aaron Schuman, and presented at UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the City Palace, the Jantar Mantar Observatory, Hawa Mahal Palace, and elsewhere. Featured international artists/photographers included: Regine Petersen (Germany), Jason Fulford (USA), Arko Datto (India), Tereza Zelenkova (Czech Republic), Terje Abusdal (Norway), Nola Minolfi (Italy), Salvatore Vitale (Switzerland),
John MacLean (United Kingdom), Sebastian Bruno (Spain), Soham Gupta (India), Asmita Parelkar (India), Christophe Prebois / Mr. Chand (France / India).
Alongside these exhibitions, Aaron Schuman also programmed (and delivered a paper entitled “Homeward Bound” at) the 3-day Jaipur Photo International Conference 2018; centred around the theme “Homeward Bound”, and held at the Government of Rajasthan Jawahar Kala Kendra Art Centre, it included artists, academics and industry speakers from around the world: Erik Kessels (KesselsKramer, The Netherlands), Aveek Sen (Jadavpur University, India), Anna Fox (University of the Creative Arts (UCA), United Kingdom), Jason Fulford (J&L Books, USA), Val Williams (UCA / Journal of Photography & Culture, United Kingdom), Aaron Schuman (UWE Bristol, United Kingdom) and more. The conference explored the relationship between photography, photographic practice and photographic archives and the concept, understanding and representation of the idea of “home” from a diverse range of international practices and perspectives.
