Abstract

This article will illustrate several facets of MacLeod’s career. First, it will consider his appointment and the years immediately afterwards, when he struggled to gain recognition of his status from the Makhzen, the Moroccan government. Second, it will examine MacLeod’s views about trading opportunities in Morocco. Third, it will briefly consider his role as the cornerstone of the British colony in Fez. Fourthly, it will examine the nature of his reporting, which, for an officer in the General Consular Service, was markedly political in nature. Lastly, it will consider MacLeod’s interaction with the Protectorate and with its Resident-General, Hubert Lyautey.
