Abstract

This presentation explores Community Climate and Nature Action (CCNA) as a model for positive tipping points. Research indicates that communities need to be engaged in decision-making to enable a ‘just transition’ to a resilient net zero world. The need to empower and inform households and communities to make low-carbon choices and shape climate solutions which address existing inequalities and social issues is well established. By co-designing solutions with policymakers, communities can foster opportunities for inclusive change which improves local finances and health, as well as supporting nature to thrive.
Developed by Bristol Climate and Nature Partnership, the CCNA model has supported 17 diverse, urban communities in Bristol to hold creative conversations around locally relevant themes of transport, energy, food, waste, nature, buildings, and jobs/economy. The communities developed action plans which aim to reduce carbon emissions while prioritising improved quality of life for residents. The plan priorities are then strategically championed through a representative Community Leadership Panel. The CCNA planning process is novel as it addresses both climate mitigation and adaptation, in parallel with social priorities.
This presentation will present evidence and insights from the project delivery and evaluation. Through linked academic research, we will also highlight the need for diverse and enjoyable engagement methods for community engagement, along with methods to integrate within polycentric governance. We argue that CCNA is an important model to inform local and national policy decisions around climate change, as it empowers local action, develops community leadership, and builds resilience for climate impacts.
