Abstract

The solo exhibition is the outcome of an artist-in-residency award at the University of Essex. Earlier on in the year, Yvonne Buchheim approached people all over campus and asked them to sing a song of their choice, unprepared, on the spot and in front of a video camera. Buchheim’s way of approaching participants invokes chance and casualty in the public realm. It draws attention to random encounters while highlighting what is easily overlooked in the everyday - the extraordinary within the ordinary.
This exhibition offers an intriguing insight into campus life and creates a portrait of those that live, study and work here.

A Stagefright public event at the Lakeside Theatre is scheduled for the 4 November 2010. Yvonne Buchheim talks about her six year search for singers and the extraordinary song archive she’s amassed from around the world, including Iran, Ireland and Nashville, Tennessee.

A programme of talks, events and film accompany this show. The brochure for the show is part of the Critical Text Series and features an essay by art critic Sean Ashton.
