An inventory of Al-Mutanabbi street

Abstract

Sarah Bodman invited Curator (Europe, The Middle East, and Asia) for An Inventory of Al-Mutanabbi Street September 2010-September 2011. In 2008, Bodman was contacted by Beau Beausoleil of Overland Books in San Francisco, referred by Steve Woodall (Director of Columbia College Chicago’s Center for Book & Paper Arts) with an invitation to put together a call for European letterpress printers to join the international Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition's broadsides print project. This call lasted until December 2009, and raised the goal of 130 contributions from international poets, artists and printers, each producing editions of 15 broadsides for the exhibition tour 2010-2011 which raises funds for Médecins Sans Frontières.

Bodman is coordinating the European tour, and Beausoleil, the USA tour. Alongside the tour of printed broadsides, a new call has been launched for An Inventory of Al-Mutanabbi Street, which is inviting 130 international book artists to join the colation and produce an edition of 3 books each for the new exhibition tour. Again a complete set will be donated to the Iraq National Library in Baghdad. Bodman is the co-curator for this new project and will be responsible for artists from Europe, The Middle East, and Asia, with Beausoleil responsible for North and South America, Canada, and The Middle East.
The call for An Inventory of Al-Mutanabbi Street runs from 1st September 2010 - 1st September 2011, after which a new international tour will star with the artists' books. The broadsides have been exhibited to date at: Marymount Institute for Faith, Culture, and the Arts, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles; The San Francisco Zen Center; Ink Spot Press, Brighton; Northern Print, Newcastle upon Tyne; Yavapai College Art Gallery in Prescott, Arizona and is touring to venues in Europe and the USA until December 2011. Bodman has written an article An Inventory Of Al-Mutanabbi Street, which will be published in Printmaking Today, Volume 19 Issue 3 Winter 2010. Beausoleil has recently been interviewed by Grendl Lofkvist for the forthcoming issue of Ampersand, The Quarterly Journal of the Book Arts, USA.
