Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy
This presentation explores the impact of mind-body interventions, specifically mindfulness meditation and Qigong, on sleep quality and disturbances in older adults. Mindfulness meditation enhances awareness and acceptance of present experiences, leading to symptom reduction and improved emotional regulation across various mental health conditions. Similarly, Qigong practices, including Tai Chi, promote the flow of "qi" and have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing depression among the elderly. As sleep problems often accompany aging, traditional treatments like pharmaceuticals and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are common, yet complementary approaches such as herbal products and acupuncture can further enhance outcomes. Notably, Mindfulness-Based Tai Chi Chuan (MBTCC) shows promise in addressing sleep disturbances in older populations. This highlights the importance of integrating mind-body interventions into treatment plans to mitigate factors contributing to sleep issues.
