This paper examines the socio-political landscape of Nigeria as it marks sixty-four years of independence. It delves into the persistent issues of governance that have plagued the nation, highlighting the patterns of corruption, inefficiency, and lack of accountability that characterize its political system. The study explores the role of civil society and grassroots movements in challenging these governance failures through protests and advocacy. By analyzing key events and movements, such as the #EndSARS protests, the paper underscores the dynamic interplay between citizen activism and governmental response.
Historical Context: The paper provides a historical overview of Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1960. It traces the evolution of its political institutions, the impact of military rule, and the transition to civilian governance. This context is essential for understanding the deep-rooted challenges that continue to affect Nigeria’s governance and the recurring cycles of protest and reform efforts.
It also considers the potential pathways for meaningful change, drawing on comparative examples from other nations. The findings suggest that while protests have brought significant attention to governance issues, sustainable change requires comprehensive reforms and a commitment to democratic principles. This paper contributes to the broader discourse on governance and civil society in post-colonial states, offering insights into the challenges and opportunities for Nigeria’s future.
