Abstract

Transport planning is a discipline in transition, where traditional techno-rational approaches coexist with an emerging practice contributing address the environmental, social, and economic crises. While there is a growing recognition of the need for more participative planning approaches and better consideration of future uncertainties, these aspects are still inconsistently operationalised.

This summary report describes the application of a method targeting this gap. FUTURES is a vision-led approach to strategic planning for an uncertain world, and the FUTURES Relay is an extended workshop structured as an immersion into FUTURES. While both methods were designed for transport professionals, this report reports on adapting and applying Relay for citizen engagement with a group of residents from Bristol, UK. The report was prepared for the participants and a larger audience, aiming especially transport planners and decision makers. It presents the participants' inputs during the workshop but also their views on the process.

This trial contributes to the body of knowledge on authentic, meaningful, and efficient forms of citizen engagement, considering both uncertainties and the multiple dimensions of accessibility.
