Cities and the defence of democracy

Hambleton, Robin

Abstract

This short article outlines ways of countering the rise of the far-right in modern politics. Drawing on the experience of innovative cities and communities three strategies are outlined: 1) Celebrate the achievements of progressive movements; 2) Defend democratically accountable institutions; and 3) Win the battle of ideas. Two themes that deserve to be given more attention are identified: 1) Exploring the nature of social solidarity; and 2) Advancing understanding of how we conceptualise identity in the modern world.
