Abstract
The temperature and precipitation extremes of coastal cities are modulated by land-atmospheric interactions and modified land surfaces. Local climate zones are used as land use representations in a convection-permitting model to simulate precipitation and temperature fields for Istanbul, a city uniquely divided by a channel and surrounded by seas with different physical properties. The simulation outputs are used to investigate how urbanisation affects local flows, particularly the interaction between the urban heat island effect and mesoscale flows, including sea-land breezes and topographical effects related to channelling flow through the strait.
The joint relationships of temperature and precipitation simulations for winter and summer are explored, revealing that urban heat circulation prevents the progression of the southerly sea breeze. Interestingly, convection occurs first over the urban area, which is hotter than the rural area. The northerly and southerly sea breezes converge almost in the middle of the city, and after their merge, the northerly sea breezes prevail and blow towards the highly urbanised southern part of the city.
Employing AI emulators, the opportunities of using stochastic differential equations are proposed for impact studies based on turbulence theory. Moreover, the pilot results of immersive experiences for decision-making using the temperature and precipitation compound risk derived from convection-permitting model outputs are also discussed.
