While evidence that EMDR can be an effective treatment for complex trauma is building, as is evidence of the efficacy of online EMDR, more evidence that online EMDR can be effective for those with attachment-based trauma histories is needed. This pilot feasibility trial aims to test a potential research design to fill this gap, looking at whether attachment-informed EMDR (AI-EMDR) is at least as effective as standard protocol EMDR online for attachment-informed complexity.
The trial team includes co-researcher consultant supervisors and therapists in private practice, who will deliver the intervention under research conditions, with further consultants trained in the fidelity assessment tool, the EMDR Fidelity Rating Scale, and a new version specific to AI-EMDR which was pioneered for this project. Client participants are recruited, screened and then randomly allocated to one of two arms, where their treatment will be measured for adherence to protocol throughout.
This poster/talk will present the results of the feasibility trial, in terms of what was learned to guide future researchers in this area, as well as any data on preliminary evidence of effectiveness.
Current literature on the effectiveness of online EMDR often relies on survey data or retrospective evaluations. This prospective trial will generate new data from real-life practice, while exploring the challenges of producing practice-based evidence. It also speaks to the call for more research on EMDR protocols which have evolved from the original standard protocol.
