Student loneliness: A study of UWE Bristol students’ loneliness experience and coping strategies
Rengel, Bec; Sultani, Syed; Cottrell, Fiona
Abstract
Loneliness is a concern among university students. Although there are numerous studies on loneliness, many focus on a single aspect of this unpleasant feeling. The present research looked at loneliness from different angles: the extent and forms of loneliness, the factors contributing to it, and areas for improvement. Findings reveal a concerning 60.3% of participants experience loneliness, with specific demographics facing higher risks. Loneliness was found to be related to the sense of belonging, social skills, and mental health issues. The impact of COVID-19 on loneliness was inconclusive. We also found that the students used talking to family and friends, walking, and riding a bike as coping strategies. It was also found that students included in the study were unaware of most UWE services. Finally, participants suggested that UWE could increase awareness of available services among students and more social events where students could gather and make connections.
