Abstract
The research provides an insight into the potential that creative methods and new types of data (e.g. visuals) might have for developing a long-term approach to smart city development. The research looks specifically into the intersection of art, place and technology as part of the introduced place-based method to engage and involve people in the green transition in a redesigned dynamic of communication to be two-way and immersive, enriching top-down and bottom-up approaches. This is derived from an immersive theatre approach that focuses on the exchange of roles to enhance communication among stakeholders. Thus, art is integrated as logic as much as language and provocation. Changing the involvement of people to be lively and actively integrated in open places or the flow of people rather than conventional ways (e.g. surveys, indoor meetings) which is accessed by those who have interest and time, also makes them more visible, activating and of added value to the daily life in the city, its momentum as well as resilient and restorative qualities. The rolling out of such methods of opening both processes of decision-making and knowledge production to be more accessible, spontaneous and experiential is done by adopting a model that evokes a multi-ripple effect of change and influence. Hence, a deeper understanding of how to purposefully bring these elements on the same page is provided, filling a knowledge gap.
This stems from the crucial need for innovative methods that assets a change of attitude and behaviour through activation given the trend of setting goals such as net-zero, climate-natural, low carbon...etc. This redefines people in smart cities as humans rather than mere users, which is essential to address established issues of in-silo working, miscommunication, restricted participation and contradictory outcomes, which result from a focus on a short-term sustainability approach, and improvement of basic service and function.
