Across the chapters in this Handbook, the breadth and diversity encompassed under the label ‘public transport’ is apparent. The book’s contents also reflect a number of significant dynamics. The future of public transport may well be characterised very differently to its past and indeed present – a case of ‘public transport is dead, long live public transport’. From a standpoint that we are currently in a period of regime transition in our mobility system in many countries, this Chapter looks to the future. This is necessarily speculative given the deep uncertainty associated with transition. Nevertheless, it allows issues to be identified that should be of relevance to present-day stakeholders in public transport and to their agency in shaping the future.
