Abstract
George Gissing's The Whirlpool (1897) is generally regarded as one of the novelist's most critically significant and successful works in the breadth of its subject matter and depth of characterisation. This edition comprises a critical introduction, notes, selected criticism of the novel by Henry James, H. G. Wells and others, suggestions for further reading, a text summary, and a chronology of Gissing's life and times.
