Abstract
The recommendations for major incident exercising are set-out within Section 10 of the NHS England (2022) Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response (EPRR) framework. Despite this, limited evidence exists to guide clinical educators deliver the quality of teaching learning needed to adequately equip learners for 'real-world' disaster medicine environments. A scaffolded approach to enhance current teaching and learning practices within EPRR was devised and pilot tested over a 12 month period at the University of the West of England. Students studying Paramedic Science, Adult Nursing and Physician Associate Studies were subjected to three progressive simulation-based-learning activities; each underpinned by well- established educational theories.
High levels of student engagement were identified when EPRR guidelines were utilised within progressive simulation-based-learning activities. These exercises collectively facilitated enhanced knowledge retention and retrieval - and the scaffolded learning approach enabled successful integration of the guideline into core curriculum delivery.
