Abstract

We report the detection of pyroelectric activity in non-centrosymmetric Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer films of structure ABAB ... where A and B are monolayers of different materials. Films consisting of alternating fatty amine and fatty acid layers give a pyroelectric coefficient p of approximately 5 × 10-11C cm-2 K-1, about three orders of magnitude less than for high performance pyroelectrics. In an attempt to produce improved pyroelectric coefficients a surface-active derivative of a highly polar chromophore has been synthesized and incorporated into an ABAB film. One order of magnitude improvement in p has been achieved to date. © 1985.
