Abstract
Alternate-layer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) assemblies, consisting of 22-tricosenoic acid with three different amine derivatives, have been fabricated. The pyroelectric activity in the films has been assessed and correlated with their structures determined using Fourier transform IR (FTIR) spectroscopy. Two of the acid/amine systems are pyroelectric but differ in that one exhibits proton transfer from the acid to the amine whilst the other retains discrete acid and amine units. For one of these systems, a pyroelectric coefficient of 1.9 nC cm-2 K-1 has been attained, representing the largest reported value, to date, for an LB film. The third type of film is not pyroelectric, and FTIR spectroscopy studies have revealed that this is due to a rearrangement of the molecules to produce a centrosymmetric structure in which pyroelectricity is precluded. © 1987.
