Abstract
The use of the term 'quality assurance' has become widespread in the health service. It is often used in the absence of agreed definitions and can lead to the treatment of important issues in a superficial manner. The concept can however be broken down into components which are revelant to doctors and which can form the background to coordinated action to improve the services available to the public. © 1988 The Society of Community Medicine.
