Abstract

Psychological interventions for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) mainly adhere to the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness. Adopting these generic models for the care of people with MS places them in the position where they have to fit in the model requirements and procedures. Quantitative results have shown moderate effects for these approaches and the paucity of qualitative findings indicate the difficulties people with MS face when applying, for example, CBT techniques between sessions. The current presentation aims to outline the process of developing a psychological intervention guided by what people with MS have found helpful and how they conceptualise the impact of interventions on their experience and management of MS. The findings generated a list of themes of an integrative group psychological intervention that was then developed further based on research findings, consultation with practitioners and a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) focus group with members of the Research Network of the UK MS Society. Preliminary results from the feasibility and acceptability study of the intervention will be presented. The concept of process-based psychological intervention development will be discussed as well as adopting idiographic methods of evaluating these interventions.
