Meeting the needs of non-UK trained European physiotherapists seeking employment within the United Kingdom

Abstract

Adaptation courses aim to help non-UK trained European physiotherapists to gain United Kingdom State registration. Recent experience of a period of adaptation supported by the University of the West of England (UWE) indicates that the adaptation period should take place with reference to educational, social, and professional contexts while being flexible and accessible to students. Similarly, any evaluation needs to consider the students, the education providers and the professional issues. Given the current staff recruitment and retention difficulties, clinical departments may benefit by supporting adaptation programmes - non-UK trained physiotherapists gaining UK State registration could help to solve current problems faced nationally by physiotherapy managers. It is therefore suggested that educational institutions and physiotherapy managers become more proactive in developing this area of professional training.
