The latest update on climate science and its effect on the built environment
Adkins, Deborah
Authors
Abstract
This talk presented an update on the latest climate science, reports from the IPCC, and its effect on the built environment.
The talk began by discussing the challenge of current emissions trajectories and demand-pull policies to spur the transformation of how we produce, transport and consume energy. The talk discussed the built environment's contribution to total greenhouse gas emissions. The earliest design decisions can have the greatest impact on reducing energy demand. The talk concluded with an exploration of current UK retrofit rates, the UK's heat chasm and solutions to support rapid decarbonisation.
The key messages of the talk were:
Buildings are bad for the climate – But we can do something about it.
Green technology costs have fallen significantly over the last decade and are likely to continue falling.
Achieving a net zero carbon energy system by around 2050 is possible and profitable.
