Abstract

The search for, wearing and collecting of gemstones has been a popular endeavour for many decades. For most gemmologists, jewellers and gemstone collectors, the crushing of a stone would be the greatest sin. For painters or those who create pigments, past and present, gem materials are regularly used for their colouring potential. In this presentation I briefly review the role crystals and gemstones play as pigments. In relation to my research in man-made crystals, I will also discuss the distinction being made between these 'real' and 'fake' crystals and their pigments and what their future potential is for both jewellery and colour art.
