Additional Information Additional Information : Appearing in a special issue, this invited paper bears witness to a continuing collaboration between James and Grenfell, whose 1998 book Bourdieu and Education: Acts of practical theory (London, Falmer Press) remains a key reference for educational and other social researchers. The paper applies the concept of field to the landscape of educational research itself, examining recent changes represented by the ´┐Żevidence-based practice' movement and the Teaching and Learning Research Programme in the UK. The article was cited as a helpful analysis by Pollard in a BERA keynote address in 2004. James was invited to be discussant for a linked keynote symposium at BERA 2006, and the international significance of that session was recognised when it was selected to represent BERA at the American Educational Research Association annual conference in Chicago in 2007. Authorship is joint and equal.
