Abstract
Chapter in book funded by Banca del Gottardo, Pro Helvetia. Building on Hammond's research into photography of the mountain landscape, this work explores in detail the international context of the Swiss photographer, Albert Steiner, in a contribution to the first book-length study of this major artist of the Swiss Alps.
The work places Steiner in the context of historical and modern mountain photographers. It is proposed that within the history of the genre, from approximately 1860 to 1960, a school of alpine realism in photography developed based on the immediate and tactile experience of the mountaineer-artist, to which Steiner made his unique contribution.
In 2006, an English edition of this book was also published: Albert Steiner: The Photographic Work, edited by Peter Pfrunder and Beat Strutzer, Gottingen: Steidel Publishers; and an Italian edition: Albert Steiner: l'opera fotografica, a cura di Peter Pfrunder e Beat Strutzer, Lugano: Galleria Gottardo.
