This first survey of the specialist public health workforce conducted by the UK Faculty of Public Health (UKFPH) highlights lack of capacity and variability, raising the profile of workforce issues. It provided a baseline for the 2005 survey (to be repeated in 2007) which demonstrates a decline in numbers.
