Additional Information | Additional Information : Greenwich Degree Zero is an artwork funded by the Arts Council England (£18,500) and the British Council (£3,500) for two solo shows in 2005/6 at The Western Front Gallery, Vancouver (26 November 2005- 21 January 2006) and Beaconsfield Gallery in London (22 February - 30 April 2006). The project was an installation of recreated 19th century media (newspapers, early film and photographs) that fictionalised reports of a real attempted bombing of Greenwich Observatory in 1894. The project was intended to offer for examination and discussion the way in which an event can be constructed through history via the media. The work used many of the display conventions of populist museums and was intended to provoke a discourse about how our understanding of history is dependent on its mode of representation. The project aimed to make this visible through the interplay between fact and fiction, opening up a critical perspective on the popular presentation of spectacular historical events. Following its showing in Canada and London, Dickinson was invited to exhibit the work at Kunst-Werke Insititute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Germany (17 November 2007- 13 January 2008) and Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Dortmund (9 June 23 September 2007) in 2007. The project was reviewed in The Guardian Review, 4 March 2006; Modern Painters, May 2006, p.117; Frieze, May 2006, p.175; Art Monthly, April 2006, pp.31 32; The Vancouver Sun (Vancouver broadsheet), 15 December 2005; Visual Arts review (3/4 pages, 2 images); The Straight (Vancouver broadsheet), 8 December 2005; It was also cited by Sven Lutticken in New Left Review, SUSPENSE AND . . . SURPRISE, (40, July-August 2006). |
