Abstract

Egypt has been known throughout history as a destination for travelers, particularly since it was visited by Herodotus during ancient times and he wrote about his sur-prises of the vast differences between Egypt and his homeland. During the Roman Empire numerous festivals and leisure events were held, creating a need for domes-tic travel between cities in the Roman province of Egypt (Lindsay, 1965). Roman roads opened up major cross-border routes that established trade routes and newly conquered areas. One notable example is the Roman road network connecting theRed Sea to the Nile River, which still retains its historical value as a contemporary tourist route. Krzywinski (2000) and Snyder (2003) assert that this Roman road fa-cilitated mobility between the Far East and Europe before the construction of the Suez Canal. During the Medieval times, Egypt was a part of major pilgrimage routes connecting north African travelers to Mecca and all of Africa to Jerusalem. Later, the Grand Tour brought the flow of European tourism toward Egypt leading to in-creased establishment of guesthouses, resorts, and private estates. Hotels multi-plied and Europeans bought estates in many places in Egypt, including Fayoum City
