Abstract

This two and a half hour ITE session focuses on Black Resistance to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and is suitable for student teachers/trainees preparing to teach History or Citizenship at KS3-4.

Teaching about the Transatlantic Slave Trade is a fundamental part of teaching about mainstream British, European and World History, as well as an important element of ‘Black History.’ In this narrative the role of the ‘Black’ communities of Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and Britain/Europe in resistance and abolition is often overlooked.

Tutors can: Carry out a series of pupil activities; Discuss the value of each task: their pedagogic strengths and challenges; their suitability for different age ranges and abilities and how to adapt and differentiate the activities.

The session aims to: Develop and introduce new subject knowledge for student teachers/trainees and explore key issues relating to the historical record, historical interpretation and representation; Offer opportunities to work towards the standards for QTS; Work within the National Strategy frameworks; Support the recommendations of the ‘Macpherson Report,’ (The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry) (HMSO 1999) which calls upon educators to challenge racism and develop anti racist approaches to teaching and learning.
These materials provide an opportunity to address this gap and show how Black agency was a key element in resistance and change, and that the Black response to kidnapping, enslavement and forced labour was not the passive one implied by some past histories.
