Abstract

In recent years, BIM has been the most common word around the construction industry. It does not only involve technology, but also several processes applied in the construction workflow that can help significantly in the development of projects in terms of time, better communication and collaboration among the construction parties, facilities management, implementation of sustainable and lean principles, in brief, a myriad of important benefits for the development of a successful construction project. However, there are still registered challenges which hinder some countries and organisations to implement BIM more successfully. Lack of skilled personnel is a key challenge that affects the demand of BIM projects and also increases the inefficiencies of the workflow, reducing the benefits that can be obtained from its implementation. This paper intends to investigate which aspects are required to educate and train the construction parties involved in a BIM project. The methodology consists in a literature review of BIM education and training. Challenges of BIM education in academia are identified and classified in four groups and solutions for its enhancement are provided. BIM training in the industry and BIM education required for clients is also presented along with the revision of BIM education frameworks from different BIM leader countries. The outcome is the creation of a framework to prepare educationally the construction parties part of a BIM process. This paper will be beneficial to any professional interested it in becoming “BIM skilled” as well as to any organisation and country in the process of implementing BIM.
